Alternative Uses for Eggs

Eggs. They’re great for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. However, with all those eggs consumed, it got me thinking about how I can make use of every component of a carton of eggs. Little did I realize, it’s not just the inside that can be versatile. This fall, kick the habit of tossing those cartons in the garbage or throwing a boring yolk on the pan. Here’s a guide to alternative uses for eggs.

The Whites: Face Mask

Egg whites may lack in vitamins and minerals, but they do contain a lot of proteins. Applying an egg white mask will hydrate your skin thanks to humectants. It is also beneficial for acne as lysozymes break down bacteria and absorb oil.

So, to achieve better skin, simply separate the yolk from the egg white and whisk until frothy. After cleansing your face, spread the mask on evenly for about ten minutes before rinsing.

The Yolk: Hair Mask

Egg yolks are nourishing for both the tummy and the hair. If you find that your hair is feeling dry or damaged, consider enriching your locks with an egg yolk conditioner. The proteins and fat in egg yolks help to moisturize and stimulate the roots.

To make a mask, whisk two eggs and apply to your head before your normal showering routine. Allow it to soak in for twenty minutes before showering. To enhance the treatment, feel free to mix in other goodies like banana, honey, or olive oil.

The Eggshell: Seed Starter and Fertilizer

We wrote about making use of eggshells in this previous post, but here’s a quick summary. Simply add soil and seeds to deep eggshells and once sprouted, you can incorporate the whole biodegradable shell into the dirt.

Since eggshells are full of calcium, they are excellent at supporting the cell walls. For stronger plants, crush the shells up and sprinkle into the soil. Additionally, it can be used as a surface shield to snails and cutworms, or as mulch.

The Carton: Let’s Get Crafty

There are so many ways to upcycle egg cartons. A few ideas include turning them into a mancala board, paint cups, seedling starters, or an alternative to Styrofoam for shipping. Also, if you are feeling super crafty, transform egg cartons into wreaths or little flowers for lights. The possibilities are truly endless.
